Are NIFT & NID same ?

NIFT and NID are two of the most prestigious institutes in India for fashion and design education.

  1. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT): NIFT was established in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It is a premier institution in India for fashion design, technology, and management education. NIFT offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various fields such as Fashion Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design, Fashion Communication, Knitwear Design, Fashion Technology, and Fashion Management. NIFT has 17 campuses located in different parts of India. NIFT conducts its entrance exam every year for admission to its courses.

  2. National Institute of Design (NID): NID was established in 1961, and it is recognized as one of the premier design institutes in India. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various design disciplines such as Product Design, Furniture Design, Ceramic and Glass Design, Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film and Video Communication, and Textile Design. NID has its main campus in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and it has campuses in Vijayawada and Kurukshetra as well. NID conducts its entrance exam every year for admission to its courses.


There are some differences between their education systems in NIFT & NID.


  1. Focus: NIFT primarily focuses on fashion design and technology, whereas NID offers a wider range of design disciplines such as Product Design, Communication Design, Textile Design, and more.

  2. Curriculum: NIFT offers a curriculum that is more technically focused and is designed to impart knowledge and skills in fashion design and technology. On the other hand, NID offers a curriculum that is more theoretical and research-oriented, with an emphasis on design thinking and innovation.

  3. Pedagogy: NID uses a more experiential learning approach, with a focus on practical and project-based learning. NIFT, on the other hand, uses a more traditional lecture-based approach.

  4. Admission process: The admission process for NID is more rigorous and includes multiple rounds of selection tests, including a design aptitude test, studio test, and personal interview. The admission process for NIFT is more straightforward and includes a written test followed by a personal interview.

  5. Degree: NID offers a four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) degree, while NIFT offers a four-year Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech) degree and a four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) degree.




Both NIFT and NID offer excellent educational opportunities for students interested in fashion and design. These institutes have a strong reputation for producing graduates who are highly skilled and sought after by the fashion and design industries. The admission process for both NIFT and NID is highly competitive, and students need to prepare well to secure admission.
