Step 1: First Screening (Fast Scan – 2–5 minutes)
This is a brutally quick visual read.
They check:
Overall visual intelligence
Whether you think, not just decorate
If this feels like a future designer or just a school project
❌ They do NOT read everything ✅ They look for signal, not polish
Step 2: Concept & Thinking (Most Important)
This is where UK colleges differ from others.
They ask:
What is this student curious about?
Is there a point of view?
Is this personal, cultural, critical, experimental?
They love:
Cultural references
Craft + sustainability
Identity, memory, material stories
Research → idea → outcome
A messy but intelligent idea beats a perfect but empty garment.
Step 3: Process > Final Outcome
This is where you are strong.
They evaluate:
Sketches (rough is fine)
Fabric tests
Material failures
Development pages
Why decisions were made
Final look = only ~10–15% of the score
Step 4: Material, Craft & Making
Especially for LCF / CSM / UCA:
They look for:
Fabric manipulation
Hand processes
Sustainable thinking
Understanding of construction (even if imperfect)
They ask:
“Does this student understand materials or just draw clothes?”
Step 5: Communication & Clarity
They assess:
Can you explain your work simply?
Are captions clear and short?
Does the portfolio flow like a story?
Bad writing can hurt a good portfolio.Simple, honest writing always wins.
Step 6: Interview / Portfolio Review (If Selected)
This confirms everything. ( Also it is not necessary that they take an Interview )
They check:
Can you talk about your work confidently?
Are you open to feedback?
Are you curious or defensive?
They are not testing EnglishThey are testing thinking

Too many finished outfits, no thinking
Pinterest-style fashion illustrations
Trend chasing (Y2K, corset-only, etc.)
No personal voice
No material exploration
